Smallish Night BrownSmallish Night BrownIn a normal year, I would have been on the river 3 or 4 nights per week in July and August. And, my photo album would have to be shuffled around to make room for another half-dozen or more “grip and grin” photos of monster brown trout.

Such was not the case this year. Rather, I took only 4 nights to swing the rodent, and only notched a couple browns in the upper teens. But, as far as I’m concerned the trade-off was a fair one, indeed. In exchange for a regular full night’s sleep, I experienced some of the best summer time streamer fishing ever! Now, the streamer bite didn’t produce any real monsters. But, anytime you can routinely dance with browns in the mid to upper teens during the summer, during daylight conditions, I’ll gladly buy a ticket and stand in line. I had a ball, and I’m well-rested.

Maybe my hormones will shift again next year, and I’ll be back into the mood for swinging mice. But, for the time being, I’m really enjoying the daytime action. It will continue, too, now that September is upon us. As the fall steelhead make their way up the river, I’ll continue swinging streamers during daylight hours. With the windows open, I’ll be enjoying the cool night time air, with my head on a pillow.
