Tailgating Success on Manistee River

ShirleyShirley“Tailgate at the River”, on May 9, was a rip-roaring success. Although the weather wasn’t perfect for dry fly fishing, it wasn’t all that bad either. The air was an unseasonable 47F. And, the wind kicked up enough to make dry fly fishing a little troublesome at times. Nevertheless, fish were caught and friends were made.

Rich and Shirley Nowicki, along with Gordon and Gail Cook were eager participants. They were joined by on-stream mentors, Dave Smethurst (from the local chapter of Trout Unlimited), and Larry Hull.

Everyone gathered at the Deward Tract in the upper reaches of the Manistee River. Following our “tailgate lunch”, we headed off to the river. Dave and Larry served as experienced instructors. After three hours of fishing, untangling snarled line, retrieving flies out of bushes and even netting a few fish, we all rejoined at the parking lot to swap stories.
